About Large Pores

Large pores are a common cosmetic concern characterised by noticeable depressions on the skin’s surface, each containing openings to oil and sweat ducts. While not a medical issue, their appearance can affect skin texture and overall complexion.

Causes of Large Pores:

Several factors contribute to the development of large pores:

  • Increased Sebum Production: Overactive sebaceous glands produce excess oil, which can mix with dead skin cells and debris, clogging pores and making them appear larger.

  • Decreased Skin Elasticity: As skin ages, it loses collagen and elastin—proteins responsible for its firmness and elasticity. This loss can cause the skin around pores to sag, making them look more prominent.

  • Increased Hair Follicle Volume: Larger hair follicles naturally have larger pore openings.

  • Clogged Pores: Accumulation of dirt, oil, makeup, and dead skin cells can stretch the pores, making them more visible.

  • Sun Damage: UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin, reducing the skin’s support structure and leading to enlarged pores.

  • Genetics: A predisposition to large pores can be inherited.

  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Changes in hormone levels, particularly in women during their menstrual cycle, can affect pore size.

Aesthetic Treatment Solutions:

While it’s impossible to permanently shrink pore size, various aesthetic treatments can significantly minimise their appearance and improve overall skin texture. These treatments work by addressing the underlying causes of large pores, such as excess oil, lack of elasticity, and congestion.

Topical Treatments:

  • Retinoids: These vitamin A derivatives (like retinol and tretinoin) help increase skin cell turnover, unclog pores, and boost collagen production, improving skin texture and reducing pore appearance.

  • Salicylic Acid (BHA): This beta-hydroxy acid exfoliates inside the pores, removing oil and debris that can make them look larger.

  • Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Glycolic and lactic acids exfoliate the skin’s surface, improving texture and making pores appear smaller.

  • Niacinamide: This form of vitamin B3 can help regulate oil production, tighten pores, and improve skin elasticity.
